The tea plant cultivar benifuuki contains an abundant amount of Methylated Catechins, an antioxidant that is marketed in Japan for relieving symptoms hay fever allergies. Drinking benifuuki green tea daily for 3-4 month before the hay fever season begins seems to work for many Japanese, so has been very popular in recent years.
Due the large amount of catechin, the tea is very bitter though, so not recommended for “good tasting” green tea. The large amount of catechin also makes it a good base for black tea as the catechin gets converted to the tannins that form the basis of black tea flavor.
